Biography:
Can you find great art outside of Havana? Yes! Norge Arostica is an artist who
lives in the small, beautiful coastal town of Trinidad--a five-hour drive from
Havana. Norge Arostica is an Afro-Cuban whose great grandparents were slaves
in the sugar fields of Trinidad. He was born in Trinidad. Cuban law prohibits
him from living in Havana, so he has set up his own private art gallery in the
cultural arts district of Trinidad. The gallery does not have a sign and customers
come by "word-of-mouth" only. Arostica's art has never been displayed in galleries
outside of Cuba. His works depict rural Cuban life. They often incorporate images
from Santeria, a Cuban religion borne of the marriage of Spanish Catholicism
and West African religions.
